13ARFTCHC - Belmont field

Greetings all,

It’s Belmont time again. There’s no Triple Crown possibility this year, but there is a chance for a Calvin Crown. Calvin Borel has a chance to become the first jockey to win all three Triple Crown races in one year riding more than one horse. Calvin has assured everyone who will listen that he’ll be on the winner this Saturday. Kent Desormeaux has called Calvin, “Naïve.” Yeah, Kent knows all about how extreme confidence in your chances can turn into easing your horse in the Belmont stretch – see Big Brown last year. Anyway, Derby winner Mine That Bird faces nine other horses Saturday, and we’ll see if Calvin’s confidence is misplaced.

As always remember the Belmont is 1 ½ miles long – a full ¼ mile (or about the length of the Churchill Downs homestretch) further than the Derby. Most of these horses will never run this far again, let alone around just two turns like they will at Belmont Park. This race has fooled more than one jockey into moving too soon only to realize with dismay he’s not even close to the finish. The horses are listed below along with the usual conglomeration of factoids, unsubstantiated rumors, snide observations, and half-baked statistics. Just for my amusement I’ve compiled a Belmont winner factor for each horse which is merely the number of times a Belmont winner shows up in the first five generations of the pedigree. It wasn’t particularly helpful for picking the winner last year, but I figure I’ll give it another shot.

Chocolate Candy – He’s been training at Belmont Park since his 5th place finish in the Derby. His workouts included a nice 7/8 mile work on May 25. He gets a new jockey in Garret Gomez who, despite being the top jockey in America the last two years, is still looking for his first win in a Triple Crown race. The pedigree looks pretty good for middle distance races, but there’s not a whole lot that says 1 ½ miles, and his Belmont winner factor is 2.

Dunkirk – He’s also been training steadily at Belmont Park since the Derby. He was 11th in that race after being bumped and steadied at various points. He still is a little light on race experience. The Belmont will be just his 5th lifetime start. He’s actually run the highest speed figure of any horse in the field. His pedigree has a lot of stamina a couple of generations back and his Belmont winner factor is 4. John Velazquez will be riding Dunkirk for the first time. He won the Belmont 2 years ago on Rags to Riches for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Mr. Hot Stuff – He ran 15th in the Derby after being bumped and squeezed at the start. He’s been stabled at Keeneland since then where he has two bullet works on the fake dirt. He gets a new jockey in 2-time Belmont winner, Edgar Prado. His pedigree has some stamina, and he has a Belmont winner factor of 4. His trainer, Eoin Harty, is the anti-Calvin Borel regarding his horse’s chances. He says, "I have no idea how he'll run. I'm going to throw him in there and see what happens."

Summer Bird – He closed from 16th to 6th place in the Derby. He’s been training at Belmont for the last couple of weeks including a nice 7/8 mile workout 2 weeks ago. He’s only run 4 races lifetime, with 1 win and a 3rd place finish. Kent Desormeaux will be riding him for the first time, and rookie trainer Tim Ice will be adding blinkers. There’s quite a lot of stamina in the pedigree, and he’s a son of Belmont winner, Birdstone, just like Mine That Bird. The total Belmont winner factor is 4.

Luv Gov – He ran 8th in the Preakness after going 8 wide into the stretch. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas (winner of 4 Belmonts) took him back to Churchill Downs after the race and he’s had one nice work since then. His speed figures have really improved in his last couple of races, but he still has only one lifetime win. He gets jockey Miguel Mena back who was aboard for that lone victory. The pedigree has a lot of stamina a couple of generations back and his sire, Ten Most Wanted, ran 2nd to Empire Maker in the 2003 Belmont Stakes. The Belmont winner factor is 2.

Charitable Man – He’s one of only two horses in the race that have raced at Belmont Park. He’s 2 for 2 at the track, including a win in the Peter Pan Stakes 4 weeks ago which is the traditional Belmont prep race. He was one of the leading 2 year olds last year until he was injured. He just made it back to the races in April, so he’s lightly-raced, but he seems to still be improving. He has a lot of stamina in the pedigree. He’s a son of 1999 Belmont winner, Lemon Drop Kid, and he has a total Belmont winner factor of 4. He’s one the few horses in the race with any early speed. Jockey Alan Garcia won the Belmont last year wire to wire on Da’Tara.

Mine That Bird – The Derby winner continues to impress observers with his fitness and no-nonsense demeanor during his workouts. He’s been training at Churchill Downs and won’t have any actual workouts at Belmont though. Calvin Borel is back aboard which makes trainer Chip Woolley happy, since he believes Calvin fits the horse well. Closers don’t always do as well as you might think in the Belmont because there’s usually a slower pace up front. Calvin will probably be closer to the front than usual, and might have some company when he starts his run since a good ¾’s of the field are closers too. Timing his run just right will be very important, and things could get mighty interesting on that far turn. Pedigree-wise there’s a lot of stamina (he’s a son of Belmont winner, Birdstone) and his total Belmont winner factor is 5. He’ll be getting a perfect attendance award for the Triple Crown.

Flying Private – He’s the only other horse to get a Triple Crown perfect attendance award this year. He rebounded from a last place finish in the Derby to finish 4th in the Preakness after a bit of a troubled trip. He’s had one maintenance work at Churchill Downs since then, but has no workouts at Belmont Park. He’s the most experienced horse in the field with 12 lifetime starts, but only one win. Jockey Alan Garcia chose to ride Charitable Man instead, so Julien Leparoux picks up the mount. There are some good stamina influences a few generations back in the pedigree and a Belmont winner factor of 5. He’s the only Polish horse in the field.

Miner’s Escape – It wouldn’t be a Belmont Stakes without a Shoeless Nick Zito dark horse. Except Shoeless Nick has been training this guy out in the open at Belmont Park, not up at Saratoga like he usually does with his Belmont contenders. I’m not sure what’s up with that, but I find it interesting. This horse seems to be an improving sort whose 2 lifetime wins have come in his last two starts. He seems to have some early speed, so he might try to set the pace. There is some stamina in the pedigree, and his Belmont winner factor is 5.

Brave Victory – Shoeless Nick Zito’s other dark horse in the race, who has also not been training at Shoeless Nick’s secret Saratoga hideaway. He’s one of only two horses in the race who’s run at Belmont Park before. He ran 3rd behind Charitable Man in the Peter Pan Stakes there in his last race. He was born on Jesse’s birthday. There’s not a lot of stamina in the pedigree and the Belmont winner factor is 2. Something to keep in mind though, Shoeless Nick Zito has started 20 horses in the Belmont and they’ve finished in the money 55% of the time.

So, that’s the field. Perhaps not the most scintillating bunch ever gathered, but I think there’s potential for this to be quite a race. The jockeys are going to be big factors. Will they let the few speed horses set a slow pace which may compromise the chances of the closers? Who’s going to bite the bullet and apply the pressure? Is somebody going to screw up and move too soon?

In the 13ARFTCHC we have a lead pack with $79.20 and a pack of stalkers with $64.40. We’re turning for home and it’s anybody’s race. It might take a long shot winner of Sarava-like proportions to decide this one. So pick your three ponies and send them to me by post time on Saturday which is 6:27 pm. The television coverage is being done by ABC this time. You might also want to tune into some of the great races on the undercard televised by ESPN starting at noon.

My picks will be:
Mine That Bird – I guess I ought to pick him at least once
Dunkirk – 10 weeks ago he was the super-est of horses
Charitable Man – I need some charity in this contest
As usual I reserve the right to be shallow and change any of these picks if I see a pretty pony in the post parade.

Safe trips to all horses and humans.

May the horse be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your bridle.
We lift them up to the jockey.
Let us shower tokens upon the jockey, our commander in the field.
It is right to give him thanks and white carnations.

Psycodelic Boat Ride

Keeneland swings into action this weekend with the 79,238th running of the Blue Grass Stakes. The field is full of horses whose owners are looking for the golden ticket. Here's the field:

1. Patena 10/1
2. Join the Dance 10/1
3. Theregoesjojo 7/2
4. Cliffy's Future 20/1
5. Mafaaz 12/1
6. Terrain 6/1
7. Loch Dubin 50/1
8. General Quarters 15/1
9. Charitable Man 4/1
10. Hold Me Back 3/1
11. Massone 12/1

The pundits have no idea who will win this race. All but three of these horses have won stakes races in the past. A couple of them are coming back after steep lay-offs (Charitable Man). The second betting choice, Theregoesjojo, has never won a stakes race, but was caught up in the rarefied flux of Quality Road.

Selfishly, I'm hoping Theregoesjojo and Patena go 1/2. Realistically, I think the order of finish will be Theregoesjojo, Hold Me Back, Join the Dance, Patena.

In the Arkansas Derby, Old-Fashioned will try to put Win Willy back in his place. In his last outing, Old-fashioned got caught in a speed duel and had no answer for the hard charging Win Willy. They're both back along with a cast of hopefuls.

1. Captain Cherokee 20/1
2. Papa Clem 6/1
3. Flat Out 10/1
4. Poltergeist 20/1
5. Ziegfeld 12/1
6. Flying Private 6/1
7. Summer Bird 30/1
8. Old Fashioned 9/5
9. Win Willy 7/2
10. Danger to Society 6/1

I'm looking for Old Fashioned to bounce back from his startling defeat in the Rebel. Papa Clem should provide a challenge. Win Willy, if he's a horse to be reckoned with, will be hard charging again from the rear. I wouldn't discount Danger to Society, however.

Lambs

As we get hip deep in our little fantasy season, there are five races to consider this weekend. After going through and peeking at them, I’ve concluded that real movement in fantasy point totals is a distinct possibility. This is an unusual week. Not too many of the front-line horses are racing. Desert Party in Dubai is the most intriguing. Dunkirk and Quality Road get a lot of hype. Big Drama makes his much-anticipated return in The Swale. Aside from those four, the fields are quiet this weekend.

The real point movement will no doubt come in the trainer and jockey categories. Garrett Gomez is aboard two top contenders in the Florida Derby and Swale. Psst...Europe is a rabbit for Dunkirk. Here’s a McPeek. Click on the links and you may go somewhere.

In our contest, !Xabbu continues to lead the way, although his lead has gradually evaporated. Poop Man and Antilles are in hot pursuit. Clifton Pond is making a strong bid while Schanuci and Driving in Circles are spinning their heels. There is no reason for Spontaneous Combustication other than he may have thought this was some new form of SCRABBLE!

!Xabbu Locks On

There is no clear favorite right now in the run for the roses. In fact, the whole sorting process is rather jumbled. This was a huge weekend. Undefeated Derby favorite Old-Fashioned ran in Rebel at Oaklawn Saturday and got locked in a speed duel with Silver City. Silver City tired and a 56-1 longshot, Win Willy (son of Monarchos)

There were other races that were just as important. Friesan Fire blasted the field in the Lousiana Derby at Fairgrounds. Pioneerof the Nile walked away with the San Felipe at Santa Anita. The other upset was Musket Man taking the Tampa Bay Derby with favorites Hello Broadway and popular picks General Quarters, and Bear's Rocket finishing poorly.

So with that all said, here's who I currently like...my top ten.

1. Friesan Fire: Big win is the slop at Fairgrounds Saturday

2. I Want Revenge: Most impressive 8.5 length victory in Gotham at Saratoga last week, weak field.

3. Pioneerof the Nile: Big win at San Felipe. Easy field though. Faces # 4 next...

4. The Pamplemousse: The true every man horse. Few predicted this horse to do as well as he has. The horse is named after a restaurant across from Del Mar. He's owned in part by Alex Solis II and ridden by his father.

5. Old Fashioned: My former # 1. When you look at it, his previous wins weren't all that impressive. He may have peaked too early.

6. Quality Road: A Virginia horse (yeah!) and winer of the Fountain of Youth over Theregoesjojo and my favorite, Capt Candyman Can. He may head to New York for the Wood or to the Florida Derby.

7. Dunkirk: Pletcher horse. Lightly raced. Hype.

8. Chocolate Candy: Another West coast horse (along with #3 & 4). Except he's come from Golden Gate. Undefeated...known speed but is proving skeptics wrong on distance. My second favorite horse (behind Pamplemousse)

9. Stardom Bound (Filly): She most likely won't try the Kentucky Derby.

10. Theregoesjojo: Stoopid name. Solid horse.

****************************

In our little family contest, !Xabbu continues to lead but Poop Man, Caped Crusader of Much is making a run (pun intended).

Air

Did you folks notice that until Saturday, I'm on the front page of the leaderbaord for the Run For the Roses contest?

I've never breathed that air before.

Monday, February 16, 2009

Old-Fashioned Butt whuppin'

I know. That was too easy. But it also is very true. Old Fashioned ran the Southwest Stakes today in a visually dominating manner. To put it succinctly, he looked like a Derby winner.

Old Fashioned broke well with Silver City muling* him. Silver City forged ahead and led Old Fashioned around the course until the exact moment you'd expect a champion to make the pass. He did with authority.

Silver City hung on for second, three and a half lengths back.

The field for this race was strong. Poltergeist ran as did Professor Z. Surprising Buzzin and Dreamin' finished third with Flat Out pushing hard in fourth.

*Right on his ass.

!Xabbu

Sometimes a person must speak up. However, it is preferable to sit back and listen. It's taken me several weeks of on and off again study, but I finally narrowed my fantasy stable down to ten horse for the 2009 Run For the Roses Contest.

This year, I've chosen to call my stable "!Xabbu." That name may seem an odd choice for a stable, yet, in fact, it is a special name. !Xabbu is a major character in the Otherland series by Tad Williams. !Xabbu is a Bushman from South Africa and commands the Xhosa language. That language utilizes different clicks and gutteral sounds. In !Xabbu's case, the ! in front of his name represents a postalveolar click. Anyway, !Xabbu's greatest attribute in my estimation, is his ability to thoroughly study and discect a problem or situation. !Xabbu never panics and truly understands his position in the cosmos.

!Xabbu would enjoy studying horses. He wouldn't really understand the whole betting thing, but he would very much enjoy studying their nature. !Xabbu would say that he would not understand what makes them hurry so much. In fact, he would study that exact question until he felt sure that he had a plausible theory.

Unlike !Xabbu, I've been studying the horses that were nominated for this year's Kentucky Derby. From that pool, I've whittled my choices for a stable down to my Big Ten. Here's some of my reasoning for those new to the contest this year. Keep in mind though that others have much more knowledge and wisdom than and have studied the situation far longer.

My sister, The Annoyed Handicapper, believes in a regional strategy to play this game. I've taken her idea and look for horses that play in Florida, California, Louisana/Arkansas, Kentucky and North. If I can plug in some horses from each region, I'll have a balanced stable. I also look to score early. I figure that horses that run this weekend are generally (with one exception) going to be running in perhaps two to three races before the Kentucky Derby. Horse that run in late February or March will run at most twice. I also shy away from the biggest names. For example, Midshipman is on everyone's best horse lists this year. But Midshipman was shipped to Dubai and will evolve out of sight before he might be turned loose on the Derby. Midshipman, no matter how good, will earn few points in our contest.

With all of that in mind, here's my stable:

!Xabbu

1. Chocolate Candy: West Coast...will run our of Golden Gate Saturday/Favorite. They say he's a little slow, but he hasn't lost.

2. Old Fashioned: Arkansas...will most likely run in the Southwest Stakes on Monday...Probably the overall Derby favorite...if there is such a creature these days.

3. Silver City: Arkansas...will race against Old Fashioned Monday.

4. ThePamplemousse: In my estimation, has the coolest story of the horses this year. Named after a restaurant and owned by jockeys.

5. Friesan Fire: Another winner that doesn't look impressive. Likely going to The Fountain of Youth.

6. Pioneerof the Nile: Recent impressive winner. Came from the back on a funky synthetic track. How will he handle dirt?

7. Captain Candyman Can: I almost threw out this horse because of his Sammy Davis Jr. name. I disliked Sammy Davis, except when he played the calvary soldier in some western and got shot with a bunch of arrows. The horse, however, is good and is learning to relax. !Xabbu would approve.

8. Patena: Ran second to Friesan Fire in last race. On many sexy horse lists.

9. Free Country: Tampa Bay. !Xabbu would approve of his name; !Xabbu would reccognize no borders.

10. ThereGoesJoJo: McPeek has a lot of horses. This may be the best.

The horse I waivered on the most was Haynesfield. This horse has run in new York and has won impressively against no competition. I'm thinking he won't get graded earnings wins. I also left off Poltergeist, Danger to Society, Beethoven,Well Positioned, I Want Revenge, Flying Pegasus, Giant Oak, and Vinyard Haven (who lost Thursday in Dubai). Plus, I left off the wonder sprinters. I won't tell you their names in case their speed figures stand up in longer races.

For trainers, I went with a favorite and pure mass. Larry Jones and Kenny McPeek.

I never have any luck with jockeys (that didn't sound right). I've chosen Garrett Gomez again. Gomez completely burned me last year, but I've chosen him again. However, I decided on the wonder jockey Julien Leparoux.

Family and friends are welcome to join our fantasy league in The Run For the Roses 2009 contest. Here are the details you'll need after you choose your stable:

League Name: ARFTCHC
League Identifier: 257130210

!Xabbu would say that I've said too much. I should talk less and listen more.

Folks, with humbleness and humility, I accept the crown of top stable owner in the 2008 ARFTCHC. Seriously, it was quite a winter and spring. This year’s group of horses were generally considered to be weaker than average. Big Brown came on late with huge wins in few races. Few horses ran in many races making picking a stable of horses that would actually run and earn money very difficult.

My original stable wasn’t much different than every other competitors’ stables. In fact, it was mediocre. However, I made my move in the mid-season horse adoption window. I looked at and chose Hey Byrn in the supplemental draft to race in the Holy Bull that following weekend. That horse won and those eight points were pivotal in our contest. I also owned two stables that had many horses running in the Kentucky Derby. Thankfully, I chose Denis of Cork (another supplemental pick) for both stables. Yet in my first place stable, I did not start Denis in the Derby. But in my weaker stable, I did.

So in the end, another fantasy year has passed. Now we have to watch and see if Big Brown can make the trifecta.

According to the website, there is a new Breeder’s Cup Fantasy challenge. We will have to try that out! Check your account for details.
